Sony Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet Compact, by the specs


Sony's knack for releasing hydrophobic and console-related devices can be seen in IFA 2014 as they release three flagship devices in different sizes. The same omnibalance design, rectangular body and dual glass protection is maintained, which seems to be the fad for Sony's mobile devices.

Sony Xperia Z3





The Sony Xperia Z3, is the fourth iteration to Sony's original flagship line-up. With its new albeit shorter six-month cycle of releasing Xperia Zx phones, Sony promises to deliver incremental upgrades to the series, and it doesn't fail to do so. 

Somehow, I disagree with their new ideology, but I find it agreeable that they stay away from the 4K-screen club because of two reasons: first, most tech critics agree that 4K resolution on small displays are not beneficial, and second, higher-resolution screens tend to be horrible battery drainers. And in case you're gonna ask, the Z3 has a Full HD (1080p) display. It is further enhanced by Sony's Triluminos display and X-reality engine, which has been the hair and skin of almost every Xperia.

Its actual dimensions put it a strand thinner on every aspect than its predecessor. Z3 has an actual dimensions of 5.75 x 2.83 x 0.29 in while Z2 has dimensions of 5.78 x 2.89 x 0.32 in. Its screen diagonal is said to be 5.2 inch. But take note - the Z3's corners now have nylon caps to protect them from scratches. Come to think about it; a phone's corners are often abused since they stick out.

On the internals department, Z3 is given a small bump on the processor side. It's running on Snapdragon 801 with a clock speed of 2.5 GHz, as opposed to Z2's 2.3 GHz speed. It retains the same 3 GB RAM of memory on its predecessor; but unlike the latter, you can have the option now for a 32 GB internal storage. You can also pack a 128-GB micro-SD card for storage junkies out there. On the software side, it runs on the latest Android version, Kitkat 4.4.4. And you should have a nano-SIM card for mobile usage.

For the camera department, it is packed with Sony-crafted lens which garners a 20.7 MP count and a relatively larger 1/2.3 sensor. It can record 2160p videos at 30 frames per second, although we have yet to see its quality. A new feature makes it more useable in low-light environment - an option to increase the ISO setting up to 12 800. That seems to be a first in the smartphone department, and for comparison's sake, my Nokia Lumia 1520 tops the ISO setting at 4000 only. Another use for a high ISO setting is that it seems to take a better image of a moving object. But a word of advice: a higher ISO means grainier images. On the other hand, its front camera has a 2.2 megapixel count which can record videos at 1080p.

Let's get a little bit more on the interesting side of things. Sony claims that with its new improvements on the Z3, its 3100 mAh battery can last two days with normal usage and with stamina mode turned off. This seems to be a really interesting (and almost unbelievable) development since most of the phones that Sony released before are criticized to have low battery life (take for example the Z1 and Z Ultra). For comparison, the Sony Xperia Z1 has a Sony rating of 1.1 days while the Z3 has a rating of 2. I will reserve my compliments later once this is proven in real life, but Sony told something that can garner potential believers: their new devices have something like a 'screen cache' which stores images that are not used for too long in a cache so that the screen won't refresh every other second.

Another interesting thing is a feature borrowed from PS Vita where you can stream your PS 4 games on your devices. The Z3 (as well as the Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet Compact) also has a native support for the PS 4 controller. For gamers out there, this could mean a difference between buying an iPhone, a Samsung Galaxy Note and an Xperia Z3. As for my opinion, I don't get it why people would want to stream their games on a smaller-screen Z3 (let alone the Z3 Compact) when they already have larger screens on their living rooms. I would like to do the reverse, though.

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

Last year, a demand for smaller phones (those with screen size below 5 inches) with flagship qualities has been raised by certain netizens. If you will take a look at the 'Mini' series released by Samsung, LG, HTC and other manufacturers and compare it to their big brothers, these 'Mini' phones are belittled not only in size but also in the spec sheet. And so, Sony, being a different thinker, stayed away from the club and produced a super 'Mini' phone - the Z1 Compact. And now, this hell of a Mini phone has another successor.

The Z3 Compact proves not only Sony's unique thinking but also that size doesn't always matter in terms of power. Unlike its bigger sibling, the Z3, Z3 Compact was released after a nearly year-long hiatus of releasing flagship products in this size category. So definitely, a bigger difference is expected to set a Z3 Compact from Z1 Compact, but does it?

Dimension-wise, the Z3 Compact is nearly identical to the Z1 Compact. Just compare the latter's 5.01 x 2.56 x 0.34 in dimensions to the former's 5.0 x 2.56 x 0.37 in. Ironically, the Z3 Compact's screen diagonal is almost a huge bump - from the Z1 Compact's 4.3-inch diagonal, it was upped by 0.3 inches longer.

The Z3 Compact houses the same internals and camera than its big brother, so there's no need to keep things lengthy in this segment. The only difference would be the screen's True HD (720p) resolution which will prove to be easier to deal with by the processors and thus produce better performance than its big brother. See, small things do beat bigger counterparts on a few occasions!

On the battery department, it houses a smaller 2600 mAh battery. With Sony's new 'screen cache' technology and with a 720p display, we could expect that this phone can last longer than its larger sibling.

Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact

The second Sony tablet, the Xperia Z Tablet, proved to be a successful creation and eventually became popular in the market despite its larger size. And after a long time, Sony enters the small tablet category with flagship specs. Meet the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, (an annoyingly long name for a product which most techies have high expectations of).


Look at the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 2013, iPhone 5S and iPad Mini retina, Z3 and this tablet and you can see something familiar. Yes, each tablet that I have mentioned looks like bloated counterparts of the respective phone. The only difference between the Z3 Tablet Compact to its small cousin is the landscape orientation of its home screen, since phones are usually oriented in portrait mode.

Its vital statistics is 8.40 x 4.87 x 0.25 in, which says it has a very thin body (just one-fourth inch) but it is definitely larger than the Nexus 7 2013. Sony also drops the dual-glass panel and opts for a matte back. Its rear camera is also fixed at 8 MP, but it would be really awkward to capture photos with a tablet (though I still see a lot of people doing this...)

Aside from the things previously mentioned, this tablet has the same internals, same screen resolution, same front camera and other specs of the Z3 (except for the battery size). Of course, one can expect less from its name, and it is the most likely candidate for PS 4 streaming due to its larger size.

On the power department, the Z3 Tablet Compact packs a battery at 4500 mAh, which should last as long as this tablet's complete name. For references, the Nexus 7 2013 has a 7-inch screen diagonal and has a 3900 mAh. The Nexus 7 2012 has a 4050 mAh.


Final words

Sony's products seem to be very attractive, especially that Sony retains its design philosophy and other functions that are reminiscent of their earlier flagships. And it didn't stop them from providing innovations to their new products. For a better perspective of these products, we should wait for these to be actually released and tested by techies and bloggers out there. I can't wait to see reviews of their new screen technology works, since it really looks like a very good innovation.

Sony Xperia Z2 tablet vs Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5

In this article, I told that according to me, the Xperia Z2 tablet was the best tablet of 2014 but out of nowhere, Samsung came out with all guns firing with the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 8.4 Although, I have to say that the screen sizes are a little weird for me. Anyways, in this comparison I will state the differences but mostly the advantages of one tablet over another and then, I will give my conclusion. Let's get started!

According to me, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 is better at all practical things. For e.g: The multi user support, the LED flash, the thinner bezels and the Super AMOLED display whereas, the Xperia Z2 tablet is better looking on paper with the glass back, waterproof rating and MHL 3 support. There is absolutely no doubt that both these tablets are beasts in their own ways and that they couldn't be more different. Personally, I am torn between these two but I think I will give a slight edge to the Xperia Z2 tablet because of it's looks :P

Microsoft Announces the 12", 799$ Surface Pro 3

When Microsoft announced it had an event today, everybody was expecting a smaller, Surface Mini. But, the company had other plans. They announced the Surface Pro 3 which features a 12" screen and is primarily targeted to replace your laptop. Also, either Microsoft did a pretty good job to keep the tablet off the internet or the employees of Microsoft are very loyal, because there wasn't even a single leak about the Surface Pro 3. Kudos to Microsoft for that.


The device features a 12-inch screen and kickstand, and supports a stylus. The Surface Pro 3 features an Intel Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 processor to boost its performance compared to the previous Microsoft slate.The device features a 12-inch screen and kickstand, and supports a stylus. In addition to this, the tablet comes with support for USB 3.0 and Microsoft's popular Type Covers in multiple colors.


The new tablet can be rested at multiple angles, courtesy of a new "Full Friction Multi-postion Kickstand". This kickstand can extend all the way up to 150 degrees, which is almost flat. And of course, this translates to a better stylus writing experience. Which brings me to the next point, the stylus.



The stylus is drastically improved over the previous one. The Surface Pro 3 boasts a pressure sensitive screen along with a dedicated key on the pen to open OneNote. If your camera is open, double-clicking on the pen's button will capture the image in OneNote, where you can mark it up and save it to the cloud. 


Microsoft also announced the new touch and type covers for the Surface Pro 3, including a docking station. The new Surface Pro 3 Type Cover includes a redesigned trackpad that's 68 percent larger with 70 percent reduced friction and a new hinged cover that magnetically seals to the screen, to allow the cover to adjust to whatever angle you position the tablet using the full friction kickstand.

Xiaomi Mi Pad with killer specs announced!

Fast. Xiaomi does everything fast.

They sell phones fast. They develop blazing fast devices. Its Tegra 4-powered Mi3 was the world’s fastest phone at launch. They’re growing fast, too: Xiaomi is now one of the world’s largest smartphone vendors.

And now, they’re the first to build a tablet with Nvidia's unbelievably fast, Tegra K1 mobile processor.


Launched in Beijing, the Mi Pad features a 7.9-inch display with 2048x1536 resolution which calculates to a whooping pixel density of 324 ppi. Its 6700 mAh battery means its good for up to 1300 hours of standby time, 86 hours of music playback, or 11 hours of video streaming. It comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB, or 64 GB on-board memory – and a microSD slot for expandable storage. It also sports a couple of 8 MP rear and 5 MP front cameras (not that I care :P).

This isn’t the first time that Nvidia and Xiaomi worked together. Last year, Nvidia partnered with Xiaomi on its flagship Mi3 smartphone – the first Tegra 4 phone. Xiaomi sold 100,000 of them in under 90 seconds last October.



This year, Xiaomi is moving into tablets.Inside the Mi Pad: the 192 core mobile processor, Tegra K1. The ‘K’ in K1 stands for Kepler. That’s the parallel processing GPU architecture found in the world’s most powerful supercomputers.

As a result, Mi Pad offers visual and parallel computing capabilities never seen in mobile devices before. Tegra K1 supports the most advanced graphics technologies – including OpenGL 4.4, OpenGL ES 3.1, and DX12.


Those are the same standards used in PCs and next-gen consoles. That means developers can bring the latest games to mobile devices. Tegra K1 already runs Unreal Engine 4, the world’s most advanced game engine. So, games with intense graphics, like Trine 2, play flawlessly.

Sadly, the Mi Pad will be available in China starting in June as an open beta – select fans will get the option to go hands-on with pre-production units. It will retail for around $240 (16 GB) and $270 (64 GB)

Xperia Z2 Tablet vs Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 vs iPad Air

Sony announced their new Xperia Z2 tablet at MWC and it is looking pretty solid to me. I think Sony has a winner in their hand because they kept all of the good features of the Xperia Z tablet (glass back, waterproof etc.) and upgraded other features to keep up with the new wave of performance hungry apps (processor, RAM etc.). In this article, I compare it with two of the best tablets today, the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 and the iPad Air.

Conclusion
In my opinion, Sony has created the best tablet of 2014 (so far, I am looking forward to the Google Nexus 10 2) and would recommend anyone to buy it disregarding the pricing which hasn't been announced yet. Being an Android power user, the software is no issue for me because I can root it anytime and install a custom ROM or even stock android. Obviously, this isn't possible for everybody but, it's still an option whenever you buy and Android tablet!

Google Nexus 7(2013) vs Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display

With black friday and cyber monday coming up soon, you can expect electronics sales to go through the roof. And that is the reason I will help you buy the best portable tablet for you. Today, I will be comparing the Nexus 7 and the iPad mini, 2 of the best devices in the 'mini tablet' category.

Size

The tablets are both 7.9 inches tall, but that's where the similarities end. The Nexus 7 is 16 percent narrower, giving it a very different look and feel. The Nexus' little bit more thickness doesn't matter too much as it is not fat.

Weight

The Retina iPad mini is actually heavier than last year's model. It isn't a huge difference in hand, but it also doesn't feel quite as feathery as the 1st-gen iPad mini. The extra heft has it coming out at 14 percent heavier than the Nexus 7.

We're looking at a familiar aluminum construction for the iPad mini, and a matte plastic build for the Nexus 7. The back of the Nexus 7 is quite similar to the LG Nexus 5. Neither tablet is uncomfortable in hand, but if you are used to using devices with one hand, the Nexus 7 should be better for you given its narrower design and lighter weight.

You have two color options for the Mini, and a standard black for Google's tablet.

If you mostly use your tablet outdoors, I would suggest the Nexus 7 as I noticed a higher brightness level and that would help for reading in bright sunlight. The 2012 Nexus 7 and 1st-gen iPad mini both had a terrible display resolution. But no worries there anymore, as these latest models are razor-sharp. The Nexus 7 does display a wider range of colors but the iPad mini has a tad high pixel density. But don't worry, you won't be able to notice ;)

Software

iOS and Android each have their fans. The Android 4.4 KitKat update is still in the process of rolling out to the Nexus 7. So if you buy one today, you might still be on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean for a little while. The iPad mini on the other hand, comes with iOS 7 out of the box. An extra note for the Android critics, the Google Play Store underwent an update on 23rd November that will help widen the app library for tablets easily before you all start yapping :P

Storage

The iPad mini offers two extra storage tier options. Neither tablet has a microSD card slot.

Wireless

Both slates are sold in both Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + cellular models. The cellular models in both devices support LTE.

Battery

The above numbers show battery capacity, but we have some much more telling numbers. In our hands-on test, where we stream video continuously (with Wi-Fi on and brightness at 75 percent), the Nexus lasted 5 hours and 33 minutes. In the same test, the Retina iPad mini lasted 10 hours and 50 minutes. We wouldn't call battery life a huge concern on the Nexus 7, but it also doesn't compare to the excellent uptimes from the Mini.

Processor

Here, you can see definitely that the Nexus' processor has more potential to work faster. The 64-bit chip on Apple products still doesn't makes any sense to me as 64 bit chips are supposed to provide RAM capacity higher than 4 GB but Apple uses just 1/4th of the maximum capacity.

The Nexus 7 doubles the iPad mini's 1 GB of RAM, making it better for multitasking.

Cameras

Nothing mind-blowing in the camera department, but since tablets make for awkward cameras anyway, I don't think that's anything to worry about.

It's hard to believe, but the 2nd-gen Nexus 7 has already been around for four months. If Google sticks with its established cycle, we could see a 3rd-gen Nexus 7 about eight months from now.

The iPad mini gives you a much bigger screen and a little better battery life, but you're also paying for it. It starts at US$170 more expensive than the Nexus 7(we did expect that, didn't we? :P).

Wrap-up

If you ask my personal opinion, hands down, the Nexus 7 is better all over. But, in the end, it all depends on you and which tablet you want. New iPad Air and iPad mini impressions!

They say that the first impression is the last impression.. Well then, lets discuss my first impressions about the new iPad Air and iPad mini that were unveiled today!
iPad Air:
The newer/upgraded version of the last year's iPad 4 brings in quite a bit of hardware changes. It has the new A7 64-bit chip found in the iPhone 5S which was unveiled in the starting of September this year. As it is with Apple, there is no official statement about how much RAM the device holds. As expected, it will be shipped with iOS 7. Although, everybody was expecting for Apple to release iOS 7.1 which should be a small update including performance improvements and bug fixes. Now we come to the "air" part of the new tablet. iPad Air is just 7.5 mm thin as compared to last year's 8.8 mm iPad. That is a 1.3 mm cut-off. Now, to earn something, you have to lose something. And in this case, battery capacity. Apple has not given us any numbers in terms of mAHs but it says that with the new power-efficient processor and even with lesser battery capacity, the battery life would be 10 hours(same as last year's iPad). It weighs 469 gms as compared to last year's 601 gms. Again, this is only possible due to the cut off in battery. Also, the iPad Air brings in MIMO(Multi Input Multi Output) WiFi. This technology was introduced in the Google Nexus 10 manufactured by Samsung which was announced approximately this time of the year in 2012. Now, over to iPad mini
iPad mini:
The 7-8" tablet market was introduce in the mainstream when Google announced the First Gen Nexus 7 in June 2012. After some time, Apple announced their 7.9" iPad mini in October 2012. These two tablets were pretty much neck-to-neck in terms of performance and specs. But there was one major problem in both these 'mini-tablets', the screen resolution. The screen resolution was horrible. The pixel density came out to be about 150-200. That is too low for even 2012's standards when almost every flagship came with about 300 ppi. To solve this problem, this year, in July, Google announced the Nexus 7(2013) with a newer processor, higher RAM and the most needed, higher screen resolution. It boasted a 1920X1020 resolution with a 323 pixel per inch density. We all pretty much expected Apple to do the same, release an iPad mini with a "Retina display". And today, they fell nowhere short. The new iPad mini has the same A7 chip. BUT, it is heavier and thicker than the original iPad mini. At 7.5 mm against last year's 7.2 mm and 341 gms against last years 312 gms.
